Easy Swaps for a More Sustainable life

In this post we will be talking you through our product and explaining how each of the six items can be used to help you cut down on single use plastics. We also talk about why the issue of plastic pollution is so important to us.

It is estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the sea.

This statistic must be one of the most quoted by people talking about the issue of plastic pollution in our seas. We use the statistic in the hope that it will shock people enough to make them change their habits, make them see just how serious the issue of plastic pollution is. While there is no doubt that it is a shocking and upsetting statistic, people have been accustomed to hearing it just like they have become accustomed to using and throwing away endless pieces of plastic every year.

But we have to stop this! Changing our habits and stopping plastic at its source is the most effective way that everyday people like you and me can help protect our oceans and wildlife. Here at Bare Ocean we want to make it as easy as possible for people to change their habits because we know how hard it can be. We chose the items in our EcoBag because they are things that have helped us to cut down on single use plastics and we believe that they can help you too.

The Beeswax Wrap is one of the most popular items in the EcoBag. It is a great substitute for cling film or tin foil and can be used over and over again for up to a year. When using the beeswax wrap simply use the heat of your hands to mould it around whatever you are wrapping. Once you have used it simply wipe it down with some cold water or a damp cloth and you are ready to use it again. After many uses, the wrap may crease and crack. However, all you have to do is put it in the oven at 100 degrees to restore it and use it over and over. We love being able to choose between the different patterns of the wraps, the florals are beautiful but my our team favourite has to be the penguins.

In the past few years we have seen lots of people stop using plastic straws which is an amazing change. Some people have shifted to using paper straws (however they often dissolve when you are only halfway through your drink), some have moved to pricy metal straws and some people have just given up on straws completely, but lots of people are just not ready to give up on straws all together. This is why we have included a pair of bamboo straws in our EcoBag. Unlike other reusable options such as metal and plastic straws, bamboo will biodegrade in just three years. The bamboo plant is also extremely fast growing which makes it a great choice for a straw.

Coconut shells are typically seen as waste but using them as bowls is a way to make good use of the whole coconut, not just the coconut meat and milk. Usually, coconut shells are burned or discarded as landfill, which harms the environment by releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere or adding to unsanitary rubbish dumps. However, by purchasing our coconut bowl, you can reduce this harm. Yes, you could just buy a normal bowl, but our coconut bowl is stylish, functional and sustainable and looks great in an Instagram post.

Our bamboo coffee cup is reusable and the perfect size for your regular takeaway hot drinks. It is an eco friendly alternative to single use paper cups and can also save you money in the long run, with many major coffee shops offering discounts for customers with reusable cups. Our cups are partly made from bamboo with recyclable silicone lids, making them a much better alternative to a single use cup.

You can plant seeds in a garden, or on a windowsill. In the EcoBag you get to chose from six types of herbs; coriander, basil, thyme, mint, rosemary and oregano. Studies have proven that having plants in homes or offices create many benefits. For example, they improve air quality since they take in carbon dioxide, boost mood and productivity, as well as just providing some colour and life to indoor space. Instead of buying herbs from the supermarket, grow your own and save money and the planet by reducing your packaging!

Tote bags are the perfect alternative to plastic bags, they can be reused countless times and they last for years. They are large enough to fit all you shopping but they fold up well and can fit in you handback or pocket for when you aren't using them. Our tote bags are handmade by our team here in London and we also hand paint the logo using a special fabric paint to ensure it lasts a long time.

We hope that this post has helped make it clear how easy it can be to start making some swaps, if you have any suggestions of your own leave us a comment at the bottom of the page or head over to our Instagram and let us know.
